(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am very new to chickens. This year my daughter joined FFA in high school (Freshman) and decided to raise chickens and sell the eggs for her SAE project. We brought home our first 6 chicks in March of this year.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
6
(3) What breeds do you have?
Well we were told we bought 2 Plymouth Rocks, 1 Jersey Giant, 1 Java, 1 Amerucana, and 1 "mystery" chicken to be determined later. We were hoping all 6 would be female, but 1 is definitely a rooster (the supposed Amerucana, but he is an Easter Egger). 1 of our Plymouth Rocks is actually a Blue Plymouth Rock and she is lovely. Our "mystery" chicken is still a mystery (maybe you can help us identify) and may also be a rooster.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
My daughter might have a different answer, but I'm enjoying how funny the chickens are. They haven't started laying yet, but we are all looking forward to that.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My girls dance. I quilt. We used to letterbox.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I've been married to my college sweetheart for almost 19 years. We have 2 daughters (15, 12). I am a pediatric Occupational Therapist. My husband is a police officer. We have 1 dog, 2 cats, and 6 chickens.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
When we first brought home the chicks I surfed the web for information on raising chickens. Your website was very helpful/informative. Since one of our chicks is a rooster we need to rehome him. I don't know how to go about doing that and I'd like him to go somewhere where he is wanted. I offered him to a co-worker with a backyard flock, but she can't take him at this time. She suggested I try through BYC. As we get more and more invested in this SAE project I've realized I need a more informed support system.
