Hello fellow chicken enthusiasts. As of 6 weeks ago, I am new to the chicken world. We ordered 16 chicks from Meyer Hatchery, and one did not make it, so now we are left with 15. We got a straight run of brown egg layer assortment, so it has been a real surprise! I found this forum while trying to research chicken breeds. I'll be making more posts with my chickies to ask for help confirming breeds and guessing at gender. At this point we are pretty sure we have a jubilee orpington, 2 lavender orpingtons, 2 partridge penedescencas, 4 barred rocks, a blue copper marans, a golden buff, and 4 yellow ones that we think may be buff orpingtons. I love watching them be "chickens." Exploring new things, dust bathing, interacting with each other and with us. I've always thought chickens (and other animals) don't belong in tiny cages, but now that I have seen chicken behavior first hand, it makes me so sad that there are millions of them living their entire lives without the freedom to do what they were meant to do. We are hoping for some beautiful egg layers, but are planning on raising some for meat as well (though this will be very difficult!). Other than chickens I'm also starting my first real garden this year, and I love making pottery (though I haven't been able to do much since the pandemic hit).
I have 4 cats and 4 dogs in addition to the chicks, so it's been interesting seeing how they all react to each other.
