Raising Layers and Meat Birds in the City
Hi everyone! Glad to now be a part of this community.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am brand new to chickens! I just got my first two about a month ago.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Two, but I am getting one more tomorrow. Yay!!!
(3) What breeds do you have?
1 Rhode Island Red named Reba - very beautiful and a great layer, but can be skittish
1 Golden Comet named Henrietta - an older lady with a very social personality. She is very spunky, silly, and curious. She also is an egg-eater, but luckily only eats her own eggs.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
It's fun to take care of a farm animal, as I grew up in the suburbs (and still live in an urban city). I also keep a garden so it will be great to have chicken manure. I enjoy getting eggs and also being able to feed the chickens my scraps so I waste less.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, playing hockey, cooking, reading, and just trying new things.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a dog and two cats and live with my fiance in Cleveland, Ohio. I am a teacher. I love to work outdoors in my garden, and spend time at Lake Erie. I love going on hikes with my dog. My dog had severe food aggression when I got him and I was told to put him down. However, I spent a lot of time training him and he can now safely live with us and is now such a great dog. He's come a long way and that is something I am very proud to have done.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
We got our chickens from a local farm animal sanctuary and one of the volunteers there suggested I join this site.
It's nice to meet you all! Bawk bawk
