Hi all, my name is Jim, and I'm a new member, though I've done a little lurking here since I've been researching chickens for years.

I currently have 3, as detailed below.

I've been a gardener, and interested in food issues, sustainability, resilience, frugality, and all that stuff for many years. Until last fall, I was living in the suburbs of Baltimore, MD on a 1/3 acre lot. I gardened and had a go at beekeeping, but keeping livestock seemed like too much. We moved to 1 acre in central NJ, and I've been focusing on the garden. My wife has a friend/co-worker who was keeping chickens and offered to set us up with a small coop and a few hens. Finally moved them in yesterday. I'm not sure what breed/mixes they are, but one looks to be a buff Orpington. The one in the photo has a very interesting low flat comb that looks kind of like horse blinders. The third is darker and has a pea comb. No eggs yet. It's been fun watching them scratch around in their run, and I can't wait to let them range around the yard a little in a few days.

Besides the chickens and all the garden goodness, we have 3 kids, 2 indoor cats, a few hermit crabs, and a betta fish

Welcome! You're gonna love it here. New chicken mamma here. We are on about 4 acres; have two sets of broodies going. First set should have been out two weeks ago. Life happened hubby still building their coop.
