Hi I’m not sure how to use this site. I live in San Diego ca. my question is about roosters with my hens. I got 2 chicks 4 weeks ago and I think one is a boy. I have 5 older hens 8 yes to 3yrs old. If the new chick is a boy will it make the older ones upset? I can’t give it away cuz I love them already. Thanks for any input. JD

Hi, welcome to byc!! Do you have enough space to build a second coop/run for them or you put dividers in your existing setup? You won’t know the temperament of the new rooster until he is about 7 months old. The older hens might bully him while he is little too. I think he has to be at least 4 months old then try little times of togetherness and see how it goes..

Welcome! If you can, put them together with a divider between them so they can get used to one another for a while first.

If one is a cockerel, the older hens will keep him in line and he will be much more respectful having been raised by the hens.

Generally flocks with 1 rooster are more behaved than hen only flocks. Roosters tend to keep hens in line, any that may have any aggressive tendencies.
