Hello,
I am new to chick/chicken raising. We got our chicks February 1st, 2025. We currently have 4 chicks in a brooder. Breeds we have are: 2-Saphire Gems, 2- Golden Laced Wyandotte. We will be picking up more from Meyers Hatchery this coming week. The breeds are a Chocolate Orpington, surprise meal maker, cookies and cream, Speckled Sussex, Light brown leghorn, Wheaten Maran, Golden Laced, Blue Copper Maran, and a Splash Maran. We are then picking up more chicks from a local lady the following week the breeds are a Black Copper Maran, Welsummer, Exchequer Leghorn, Confetti Egger, Easter Egger, Olive Egger, BBS Amerucana, and Ermine Amerucana. My favorite aspects are having backyard chickens is growing my own chickens with my family. Rasing my kids to know where their food comes from and having beautiful eggs. Some other hobbies I have are raising Monarch butterflies in the summer months here in Ohio. I also love to garden between flowers and veggies. I am married of 13 years and 2 daughters 7 and 4. We have a goldendoodle (Mason) a Dalmation (Quint) a cat (Cali) and a mini rex bunny (Cadbury). I am a preschool teacher, and my husband is a full-time Fireman. I joined the backyard chicken Facebook group a month or so ago. We would like to possibly add a rooster to our mix. What would be a good breed to go with these colorful egg layers? I would love to produce variations in the eggs. Looking for a calm rooster around my family also. We live in town and they will not be able to free range. We do have a fenced in back yard that the coop and run will be inside of.
