Hello! I'm from Wisconsin and will be new to chicken keeping. I grew up on a farm but have very little chicken keeping experience. I'm planning on starting our little flock of 4 in the next week or so. Unfortunately our town ordinance restricts us to 4 hens, so we won't have near the flock I have been envisioning for years. We're planning on building the wichita cabin coop, but haven't been able to get ahold of them, so if anyone has very similar alternatives with solid plans, please let me know!

Hello, and Welcome to BYC!! :welcome :woot
Here's the Wisconsin thread where you can chat with other peeps from your state!:D
Also, what breed(s) do you plan on getting?😊
I'm looking for medium to large, cold hardy, and good layers. Definitely thinking barred rock, but open to a lotb since I'm still not sure what I'm going to be able to actually get with the shortages. I started looking in mid February and the hatcheries were already booked till August, so I'll be reliant on what I can find locally.

Barred rocks are a good option! Despite the weather being below zero sometimes where I live, my rocks (1 white rock and a barred rock), have surprisingly not gotten frostbite on their combs or wattles.

Another great cold hardy breed that is a great layer are Easter or olive eggers. My EE, going on five years old, still lays almost every day. Her daughter is a great layer as well 😊 Also, they usually have pea combs which are very frostbite-resistant because of their small size.
