Hello all! I am a military wife and mother of four living on a hobby farm in Oklahoma. We have 3 horses, 1 dog, 3 cats, 2 hamsters, 3 gerbils, a very full Koi pond, and raise registered Dexter Cattle. We've wanted chickens for a long, long time, but just added them to our "family" a few months ago. They are a blast and we wish we'd done it sooner! My DH and I both raised chickens for meat when we were kids, but this our first venture with egg layers. We have 9 red star sex link hens, 1 Rhode Island Red rooster, and a rooster and hen of mixed breeding. We bought them all as a flock from a family in southeast OK. They had gotten them from a commercial operation that had snipped all their beaks - and not just snipped - they have NO beaks. Very sad! But they are the sweetest hens, they follow us everywhere and love to be held, petted and carried around. They have free roam of our acreage and come to the coop at night. We do have our perimeter fenced with 2x4 woven mesh fence to keep them in. This isn't a young flock, and not all the hens lay, but it doesn't matter to us, we love watching them and having them around. I look forward to learning all sorts of things from this site!

sounds like you have a fun place. We raise Hereford Cattle. I am so sorry to hear about the hens not having any beaks -- that's so sad. Thanks for giving them a good home. And thanks to you and your DH for serving our country.

They seem to drink okay, but they can only eat if the feed is deep. They have a hard time picking scratch grains or bugs off the ground. But if I hold the scratch grains in my hand they go nuts for it. They also try to jump right in the feed bin when I open it to refill their feeders. I need to record it because as soon as I get one out, another jumps in. It's pretty funny.
