My wife and I are new to raising chickens. Fortunately we have a good friend who has been able to offer advice when needed. He recommended this website for educational purposes, so we joined up. Our chicks are now eleven weeks old. We brooded them in a borrowed water trough and barely finished our 6' by 10' by 8' coop (We used the "Garden Coop" plans) in time. They were really "cooped up" in that trough and making a real mess of things.

We have eight birds. Two Welsummers, two California Greys, two Speckled Sussex, a Silver Wyandotte, and one Ameraucana. We happened to get two roosters in the bunch.

We enjoy vegetable gardening and our large suburban backyard is in full production. We are hoping to allow the chickens the opportunity to range sections of the yard. Any advice concerning this would be welcome.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined!!
We free-range our chickens so they go everywhere. We fenced off our garden though.

Thanks for the warm welcome! We actually tried letting some of our birds out to see what they would do and they loved the freedom, eating grass blades and a few weeds. We had a little bit of a time getting them back in their coop. They really seemed to enjoy the freedom. Miraculously I acquired some plastic fencing material from a friend that will aid us with letting them have more area to run. We are really enjoying the learning process!

Hello and welcome to BYC. I'd suggest camping off an area for them. Once they discover a garden full of yummy vegetables....
