Just joined. I have recently "retired" and am looking forward to developing the little farm I've always wanted. I live on 5 acres in WAY South Texas, which presents some unique challenges, to say the least. I look forward to learning lots and will try to share "hits" and "misses".

Two Crows-
Hope we can exchange ideas/experiences. I am especially interested in the breeds of chickens you have found do well in the heat.
Thanks for the welcome!

Hi again, Debi...for what it's worth, the Mediterranean breeds (Leghorns, Anconas, Minorcas, etc.) are said to do well in the heat. They are generally large combed - a feature that dissipates heat. For whatever reason these breeds are also said to be among the most flightly and nervous. That is not to say that other breeds don't handle the heat well. It would stand to reason that if your birds don't have a ton of shade, light colored birds - Delawares, White Wyandottes, etc.) would do well. The bottom line is chickens handle cold better than heat but if you provide lots of cool fresh drinking water, breeze, ventilation in the coop, and perhaps most importantly, shade, just about any breed will thrive. Good luck to you!

Here is a link to a blog page from the Murray McMurray hatchery where this question was asked:

And here is a chart where breeds are compared by various attributes. Hope it helps!
