I have 3 chickens that are bigger than bantams. We made a small coop with a tipi style outdoor run approximately 10 x 5 ft. They seem too big for present run. What space do they need?

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

10 square feet of run per bird is generally the recommended minimum, although more is always better.

Check out the Learning Center for lots of good info.

It depends - are you going to free range them when you are home and let them stay in coop and run the rest of the time. They like to forage.

rule of thumb is 4 sq.feet per bird in the coop and 10 sq.feet per bird in the run. You can always make it bigger - people have a way of getting more and more chickens which is called chicken math. It comes with some guidelines ie, If you get a roo(ster) replace it with two (pullets), and so on - nothing but enablers here - we'll never tell you to set limits
