Hi, I have been raising 10 - 12 chickens for about 3 years. I recently acquired a new young rooster in the last year. My chickens range from 3 years down to just 1 year. I have been getting 6 - 7 eggs daily and I enjoy the girls and my rooster very much. Just recently one of the chickens have become broody and has been laying in the nest (one of 3) on six fertile eggs. I decided to see if we can get some new little chicks. So after about 3 days of her sitting on the eggs we decided to make a place in the outside coop for her to be separated from the rest of the flock to continue sitting on the eggs. We took an old popcorn popper (it has a heat lamp) and took all the parts out and put straw in the bottom and made it a larger nesting area for and if we get little chicks. We waited until dark and transferred her and the eggs to the larger nest. She seems confused and I hope she will see that her eggs are all there waiting for her to sit on them. If she doesn't I will think about putting an egg turner in the new brooder and turn the heat lamp on keeping it warm like an incubator. I'm new at this and I hope she will do all the work. I will keep you all informed.

I have a mixture. 6 Orphingtons, 3 Easter eggers, 2 silkie/Polish crested mix and 10 5 week old Olive Egger Mixed. I am crossing my fingers on those chicks, but each day we loose another egg, I am not holding my breath. I am considering ordering some day old chicks to put under her if hers do not hatch.

That's a nice mix of chickens you have. I like the the appearance and gentle temperament of the Buff Orpingtons and my granddaughter likes the colored eggs of the Easter Eggers. I used to have some Golden Polish/Black Silkie crosses and they were some of the prettiest birds I ever had. Good luck with your broody hen.

Welcome to BYC!

You did good by moving her and the eggs at night. But sometimes the hen still gets confused or just doesn't like the move. If she abandons the eggs, you will need an incubator to hatch them, or another broody may take them as well.

Good luck with your broody and her eggs and welcome to our flock!

I woke up this morning and she still isn't laying on the eggs. I guess I will incubate. Do you know how long I should wait to see if she will sit on the eggs?
