Hello,
I have been raising backyard chickens for 4 years. We have had anywhere from 10-17 hens in our flock. We have had to deal with coyotes and hawks as our main predators. We have had two "egg inside of an egg's" one being featured in our local paper (on the front page!) Myb 8 year old has joined our local 4H group. We have been nearly problem free but are having some challenges this year. (Prolapsed vent, paralyzed leg, our first rooster! and some serious pecking order challenges) I have read the forums off and on and finally got registered. I hope to gain some insight into some current problems we are having.

Welcome to the flock. How is the bird with the paralyzed leg doing? Do any others have similar problems? That could be a symptom of Marek's disease, or from other causes.

Welcome to BYC!

Well, this is the place to be for all the answers! Sorry you are having all these issues. Feel free to ask any questions you need to. We have many areas of BYC for all your questions.

Enjoy this journey you are on and welcome to our flock!

I thought about Mariks but she did come from a hatchery and I talked to the feed store I got her from about it. It has gotten better. After isolating her from the rest, she has been back out in general population with no issues. She is now able to walk freely on her good let and just uses her other one as a balance one. She runs right out when the food is there and is getting along just fine. :) My main problem is a poor injured 9 week old that was nearly pecked to death by a couple of Leghorns that have all of a sudden got very aggressive to the littles. They killed another one 2 days after we found our injured one. So doing some forum searching to see what to do about the aggressive ones since my 9 week old looks like she will make it but I can not risk her being ganged up on again.

The injured one is separated and is recovering. Basically I found her with the top of her head behind her (his?) comb raw and bloody. All the feathers in this area are gone and I think the skin is too. Can a chicken live after being scalped??? She is getting stronger everyday. She has been out with us on the grass today and stretching her wings and doing some grooming as well as itching around her wound. I think I will need to take the advise that I have found in my searching here...isolating the aggressive ones for a couple of weeks. I just can bear the thought of them going after her (him) again if and when she recovers.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the problems you are having with your flock. Chickens can recover from some pretty bad injuries, if you have questions about treating the hurt one you might want to post in the Emergencies forum about her for suggestions www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

When you are combining flocks / adding birds it is best to wait until they are about the same size and then do it gradually over a period of weeks, letting them get to know each other separated by wire works well, ie if you can divide the coop or keep the younger ones in a cage in the coop. There is a good article in the Learning Center on adding to your flock https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/adding-to-your-flock

Welcome to BYC! Sorry about the problems you are having this year. You will find lots of helpful information on this site. What kind of chickens do you have?
