The 1/4 inch is slightly stronger, but I've always used the 1/2 inch and never had a predator tear through it. If a bear decides to get into your coop, neither one will be any help. As enola said, only electric fencing will keep a determined bear out (or some good guard dogs that know how to tag team a bear).
