I'm a newbie and looking for someone in the north central part of WV to talk to about chicken problems. We've been raising them for about 3 years, have had up to 40 ladies, but need advise on how to stop their cannibalism. We loose at least 3 eggs a day, sometimes less, sometimes more, and have provided a separate feeder of calcium for them to satisfy their needs, but they still prefer their own children. Also looking for 3 roosters, preferably Phoenix, as they are smaller and less aggressive. I need to find someone within a reasonable distance to confer with. I have another 20 chicks coming in about 2 weeks from Polk, Ohio, so I need to start culling out the older hens, whom I suspect are the culprits. I've reconditioned a smaller coop to accommodate the soon-to-be-removed, old timers. They have a large run, they are not confined to a coop, so I don't understand their need to eat their own eggs. As you can tell, I'm a little bit frustrated with the lack of results from my efforts.
