Not sure how I got here, but 2 weeks ago I knew nothing about chickens, and no thoughts at all of owning any. A pic of a coop from somewhere implanted on my mind, and next thing I know, I'm looking thru all the info here at BYC. A trip to Lowe's or 2--or 3, and a few days modifying a puppy pen, and I'm the proud owner of a coop! It's 4x4 with added nest box, 2 roosts with poop board, and doors for easy access. Looking thru all the coop pics here gave many great ideas. Looking forward to learning more, but would like any suggestions you might have for my coop (pic below) or the birds I have coming. I ordered 3 Ameraucana, 2 Barred Rock, and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte from McMurray, that will be here next week. They are 22 week pullets, and I have Dumor Layer crumbles and Dumor oyster shells, wood shavings for the floor, ??? in nest box? Any advice for the initial care of my new flock would be much appreciated....many thanks to all that have taken time to post in the forums, looking forward to browsing thru them some more.

That's a lovely coop! Enjoy your chickens :)

The rule of thumb is 4 sq.feet per bird inside the coop, and 10 sq. per bird in the outside run. Chickens tend to fight more when crowded sometimes with disastrous results, chickens can be quite cannibalistic .

You have a lovely coop, I wonder though that the floor slates will be too uncomfortable for their feet. In some cases their feet may fall through the slates.

That's what I was thinking!
