Hi, I am the proud adoptive mom of 4 lovely little ladies (an easter egger, rhode island red, redstar, and buff orpington. I joined thissite a couple of weeks ago. The girls are about 2 months old and geting bigger by the day. Sometimes I just love to sit out at the coop and "chicken watch". Recently, I have been letting them out of the pen and lead them to my fenced in garden. They are not always cooperative! I am realy enjoying this site. I am getting lots of useful info. Have so many questions!!

Thank. ! wonder if anyone has the answer to this. I got a recipe for chicken dusting powder and mixed it today. It consists of 1 part each fireplace ash, road dust, sand and diamotaceous earth. I put the mix in a shallow pan and placed it in the pen. My chickies thought it was food and started eating it. I was a little afraid of that so I took it out. Is there a problem if they ingest these ingredients?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like you have a cute little flock! I've never used that sort of recipe, not sure what road dust is, the main thing I would worry about is if they are in a run they often will eat things they normally would not because they are bored etc, so even if a little won't hurt them, they may go overboard. Maybe do a search and ask on some of the dust bathing threads how people manage it? You might like to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center And it is always fun to check out your state thread for chicken keeping neighbors https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/248345/pennsylvania-unite

Welcome to BYC!

Sounds like you are really enjoying your flock! Chickens know what is good for them, so I am sure they won't eat much of this mixture, but if you are unsure, take it away. Kelsie has left you with the link to the learning center. Definitely stop by for some great articles on all the aspects of raising your new birds.

Make yourself at home here on BYC and welcome to our flock!

Thanks for the link. I will be looking at that soon. Wasn't sure about road dust myself so I just got some dirt. I was more concerned with the diatomaceous earth. I really am enjoying the flock. They are so adorable. I will post pictures when I can.

As long as you have FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth you are fine. It's actually good for them. loaded with minerals. commercial farmers and producers mix it into their feeds, as do I.
Horticultural grade how ever, definitely not so good.
