New Mystery Chicks

I have babies that are supposed to be Australorps, they look just like your black ones. They had the white down their breast and the little white on their face. They've lost most all of the white now. So cute! I'd lay my money on Australorp, but like I said they're "supposed" to be! I've already found that 2 I thought were buff orpingtons were actually cornish rocks!!! I may have to go with mail order from now on instead of Tractor Supply! :(
You really can't trust TSC. Sad. But the employees don't know much about chickens. I once asked the manager of a local TSC if they only order straight runs and could possibly order pullets, and he had no idea what I was talking about!

If you have any home owned private feed stores in your area, they are much better with breeds and ordering pullets only.

I'm learning that, last year was our first year with chickens and it wasn't as big of a deal. We started out with 8 and just went with what was labeled as good layers. This year I was a little more selective and had an idea of what I wanted to fill out our flock. They didn't have exactly what I wanted and then I had the mess up with the cornish hens. I'll probably just go the route of Craigslist if we get any more. Unfortunately most of our local feed stores have closed. :(

I think it also depends on the tsc. if you are in a relatively populated area yes more than likely they don't know as much because it's just a job and they have little to no farm or livestock experience. I worked at tsc in a smaller town and we all had are niche because we all loved farm animals we owned them, wished to own them, grew up around them, something. our manager was a retired farmer and seemed to know everything. so it all depends on the store.

Yes it does. There are two stores with in 75 miles of me. Both are in heavy farm/livestock areas. One of these stores is really good with knowledge. The other store is clueless. LOL Must be the management as you suggested. :-)

Well I went back to the guy I bought them from (very nice man) and he says the yellows are RIR and the blacks are the Australorps. Time will tell. On another note I now have four Lakenvelder chicks.
He was practically giving them away! After some quick research now I know why... If anyone out there has some positive things to say about these birds I would love to hear them!

At least they are cute :) For now...

Beautiful chicks whatever they are. I'm not at all familiar with the new breed you got from him but, maybe after they go through your "finishing school," they will learn to be a good kind of chicken.
