I think I have the blues pretty much down, so now my new stumper is mottleds. I have a trio of mottled bantam cochins. A friend of mine has a black bantam cochin pullet that she is going to trade to me. I know I can put them together, but I'm not sure what the results would be? The eggs from the black would show black, but carry the mottled gene, correct? Unless the pullet also carries the mottled gene, then her chicks would be mostly mottled? Is that right, or am I way off?

So her chicks, provided she doesn't carry the mottled gene, would be considered 'black with mottled gene'? Then those birds babies should be like 50/50 mottled? Or is it more complicated than that?

Oh, and the roo and 2 hens I have that are mottled should have all mottled babies?

mottled x mottled = mottled
If you take the black split chicks and breed them back to the mottled roo then you should get about 50/50
