I have recently bought my families farm house/land and starting from 'scratch' ;-) literally. I have bought a coop, heat lamp, feeding/watering trays, etc ...

I have gone crazy looking online at the different breeds and considering what to purchase first. I'm open to suggestions.

I mainly want good eggs for cooking but love the kooky varieties! Mainly the silkies, wayandottes, the sumatras (wow!), the bantams ... I just can't decide what's best and if they are friendly companions?

I have a 7year old daughter that is eager to help as well, I understand the bantams are fun for kids b/c of their demeanor??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Elaine

! Love your enthusiasm! I think most varieties can be friendly if raised right. I think just look at lots of pics and select the a "kooky" mix! Best of luck to you!

Hello and welcome to BYC from Kentucky. If you are looking for some good egg layers try considering the sex linked cross breeds which have been specially bred for good egg production. They go by commercial names such as Red Star, Golden Comet, Black Star, and many others.
