Hi my name is Rebecca and I'm 24. I live in a small town in south carolina. I was adopted by a RIR and I just bought 4 (Breed unknown)to keep her company.

Im planning on free range as the RIR does so. How long should I keep the new 4 (ages 4-5 months) in the pen (its an old very large dog travel crate.

you could let them out any time now - you realize tho that free ranging has it's risks - like raccoons, fox, coyotes, opossum etc, reducing your flock to a pile of feathers. They would stand a much better chance if you had a dog that protected your livestock and stayed near them.

I plan on getting a coop and pen built soon and only letting them out in the day time to range. Ive got a few cats in my yard that while are scared of the chicken (the RIR is the only free range right now as she adopted us and I cant touch her. ) shes the girl in my profile pic I also plan on getting my yard fully fenced.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Soon as I figure out how to ill post photos of the others maybe I can get a bit of help on breed id.

Would you call 5 a flock??
