Hi my name is Mike and I live in Rancho Tehama Reserve in California..My brother bought my chickens from a community member a few months ago..Not sure the type of chickens they are.. 6 white and 6 redish brown color like the rooster. I will post some pictures of them and there living quarters. Any feedback would be appreciated..

Hi Mike, welcome! My guess is your white chickens are White Leghorns (pronounced Leggurns) and the brown ones are Rhode Island Reds. The white ones will lay white eggs and the bown ones (surprise!) will lay brown eggs. I hope you and your family like eggs, because you're going to get a lot of them!

Be sure your pen, or run, is safe from predators. Chicken wire only keeps chickens in, it does not keep dogs, coyotes or raccoons out, those animals will tear right through it. Reinforce the chicken wire with hardware cloth and field fencing.

Move your roosts up to about 3 or 4 ft high and take out any nests higher than that. You do not want the chickens sleeping in the nests.
