New Quail Keeper

hey Guys, New user and hope you all go easy on me! my better half and myself have taken on a pair of quail and have a make shift cage at the moment untill i build somthing better,

i have a design drawn up and what wood i need to build it with but one thing i am struggling with it the wire mesh for the floor in the pen area, if seen this

but im not really sure what im looking for, ive read you dont want it too thick and small or the poop wont go through the holes and if its too thin it will cut up the quails feet!

i wont be having more then 4 or 5 quail and these are for pets and eggs


id be very greatful if someone could point me in the right direction. should i get pvc coated wire mesh?!

I am raising mine in rabbit cages.
I beleive the bottoms are made of 14 gauge wire that is 1 inch x 1/12 inch. But mine are inside a shed. Not sure if that matters.
I know some farm stores carry it.

I use 1/2" wire mesh for a floor. Not too big, not too small. I don't know what guage it is, though. If you would like, I can post a picture of my cage and post it on here. PM me with any more questions you may have.

For one of my cages, I used 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth (aka, wire mesh) for the entire cage around a wooden frame that I constructed. One of my cages has1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth for the floor and 1" x 1" wire fence for the sides and top, and my month old chicks can not escape through it when I'm cleaning out my brooder. Both cages are currently inside, but within the next week, I will move both outside to an enclosed patio.

I would use 1/2 inch. 1/4 inch isn't large enough for the poop the fall through and you'll have to manually scrub the poop that sticks to the wire. PVC coated would probably be better in the long run because the poop and pee is acidic and after a long time the wire mesh breaks but that's only if your gonna have the same pen for 20 years.
