Long story short, my friend at the local shelter saw they got a duck in so I now have a free duck. I posted a pic on Facebook and the consensus was that she? is about 4 weeks old and could be a runner, pekin or a buff orphington. Any thoughts? I have a heat lamp in the corner but she does not use it much so I may give her a bathtub swim this afternoon.

I'm calling her Paisley until I know the sex. She is noisy but it may be because she is by herself. She is TERRIFIED of me. Any tips for taming a duck?

She's a sweetie, will she eventually have buddies, i see your getting ducklings this month. As for taming her just sit with her talking calmly she has been through a stressful time and right now just needs peace and calm in her life so just your presence and good food will help. Maybe after a few days try some dried meal worms and see if that warms her up. It will take time to earn her trust but it will be worth it.

I'm hatching out some Magpies soon so she will have some buddies - but she will have to be patient. There is a rabbit in the room with her (the dog pen keeps them separated).I'll get her a stuffed toy today.

I have plenty of mealworms for my chickens so I'll try the bribing method :)

Peas also, correct?

Yes a stuffy and a non breakable mirror will help and thawed English peas haven't met a duck yet that didn't like them.

Poor baby. I've had a weather related migrane that made me dizzy all day so I couldn't run to the store to get a toy yet (no one wants me driving like that lol). I did sit with her some and she is so scared. I just sat and didn't move much but she still freaked out.

Do you all suggest I hold her, or just sit next to her.

I'd just try sitting next to her while she's still so freaked out. Poor thing. Maybe try bribing her with (thawed frozen) peas? My ducks will do ANYTHING for peas. Just put some in a bowl with hot water to thaw them, and set it down near you so she can see it. If she doesn't come near, push it a little farther away until she does. Just remember, REALLY slow movements, like molasses. It's so easy to startle them with sudden movements.

Good luck!
