So here is my new rooster. He is a 1 year old Silky mix. I am afraid he has scaly leg mites. He smells too. The place I got him from let their chickens free range during the day, but the coops they get locked up in at night are nasty. Fecal matter a few inches thick. I can't even breath when I stick my head in there. He smells like this. Do scaly leg mites, if that's what this is, stink? I'm afraid the stink would be from a secondary infection, but upon me examining the legs, I didn't see any puss or blood indicating one. I did take some warm soapy water and a toothbrush and gently scrubbed his legs. Nothing came off, but I really didn't let them soak that long. Then I smothered them in Vaseline. Fortunately, he has been quarantined, so nothing has contaminated my coop or hens. These pictures where taken the day after I cleaned and Vaselined them, so none of that is chicken poop. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like other pix of scaley leg mites to me. I do have to say I'm not experienced with it. Could the smell be just dirty chicken? May be he needs a bath. Good luck. Hope he doesn't have any kind of infection.

I would say yes.. Make a warm soapy bath and let his feet soak for about 15 minutes.. Then take an old tooth brush and gently brush his legs to get the gunk off.. Dry his legs really well afterwards and cover them in petroleum jelly.. Keep him separate from your flock.. Which, being he is a new roo, I would think you are going to do anyway.. Even if it is just built up chicken poo, this treatment won't hurt him...

For some reason silky birds have this attraction to piling up dirt and I mean hard on their feet.

You should first put the bird in a warm soap bath and clean him/her up. Probably needs one any who knowing silky birds.

Looks like a mix of mites and dirt to me. Don't try to pick the dirt off, it is really hard to do this and you can injure the feet.

Silly Silkies.

Definately scaly leg mites. I have had a very hard time ridding this from my flock, but I think Im finally on top of it. I have tried many treatments; vaseline, vicks vaporub, linseed oil/kerosene mix but have the best results with ivomec dropped directly under the scales and rubbed completely over the legs. Others have suggested dousing with ivomec internally or at the base of the tail, but this hasn't had the desired effect.
