Hello.
about 4 weeks ago we got a free 16 weeks old hand raised dark barred Plymouth rock rooster (he was given away because you aren't allowed to have a rooster in suburbia), very nice with people, and he was getting pecked for a while by the hens, then as he grew he seems to have integrated into the flock, he is not the top chook yet, but he is in the order. we lately noticed that one of our hens,(stripe) who is lame, but still walks, her comb had scabs on it, like she had been pecked and bled a little, not very bad but noticeable. and we also noticed that she would not leave the coop in the morning to range with all the others, but rather sat in the back open area of the coop all day. we found out she was avoiding the rooster, when she saw him, she would run for the bushes and hide, and the rooster would chase and start grabbing and pecking viciously. i don't know how far the rooster would go if i let him, every time he does it, i flatten him on the ground to "chickeniliate" him.
so why would he be doing this? is it because stripe runs away when she sees him?
Any thoughts and ways to stop it appreciated.
Thanks.
