Chickens have a pecking order....1 is the leader and each bird has a place on down from this leader. Generally the flock leader will be the rooster. If no rooster is in your flock, one of the hens will be the flock leader even if it is over 1 bird. Flock leaders get to pick their roosting spot, they rule the roost.

So when the rooster came on the scene, he took the best roosting spot.

Good luck with your flock!

Oh, Emily my white one can be nasty to my red one Dharma. Now will I have chick's? I have never done anything like this before.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Check out the BYC Learning Center for a lot of chicken info. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center If one of your hens decides to go "broody" and set on eggs properly, if your new rooster is doing his job, she should be able to hatch out chicks... there are several articles in the Learning Center on Broody hens and raising chicks.
