Hi have just joined the forum, i am really interested in keeping chickens and as soon as can get a coop/hen house i will buy some chickens!! is there anything i really need to know about them? which is the best type to have? as want them as pets and friendly as have 2 children.

Everything you want to know you can find here on BYC. I think Silkies are the calmest of all but that's just my opinion.

First off

from Tennessee Well..........I can tell you they are ALOT of fun to watch

..........as to what breed depends on what size, egg color, color of chicken, there are so many some that are cold hardy some that are heat tolarant, I have a 4yr old and a 14yr old.....I got my first chicks last year both kids loved every minute of it!!! You can get chickens as chicks (which i recommend) and raise them or started with juveniles or hens already laying....so it all depends on what you want and what works for you. If you have any questions you can search a breed thread and ask questions people always willing to give help on here

edited to say: yes silkies are the calmest i think too!!

Welcome. I have buff orpingtons, and they are great lap dogs...er, chickens.
I think 'friendly' requires attention and handling. A 'few' is better than a bunch for that purpose.
I hope you find the best chicken for your needs.
