Hello! I am new around here from NC. My husband and I are raising our first crew of backyard gals. We purchased 6 pullets from the local feed store 4/8 and they all seem to be the same kind. I am not quite sure if they are White Rocks or Leghorns. (See attached picture). Anyway, I wanted some variation so I purchased 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes. I can't wait to watxh them gro as I have the other gals. Any ideas on what I have in the first group? This is a picture of one with a 'prize' running from the others.

Hello and welcome....so glad you joined BYC

I'm no good at guessing breeds....I'm never right LOL..but yours are cute as can be !!! Love the wyandotte breed too.

I dont know if you have predators where you live but you might consider putting hardware cloth around the bottom of your run up to about 3 feet from the ground. Chicken wire is great for keeping chickens in but raccoons and other predators can easily tear thru chicken wire or reach thru the chicken wire and pull your chickens out. Unless you have guard dogs that is.

Good luck to you ....enjoy the site :)

I need to look into hardware wire (? I will have to ask Hubs what this is) because I am kinda worried about predators. However, right now my gals are coming in to their 'temporary tote home' at nigbt because they are young. How old should they be before we leave them out overnight? Will they learn to roost on their own? I have been leaving them out til dusk, and they go to 'sleep' and then bringing them in... but they are sleeping on the run floor - which also worries me. I am a rookie over here! Need lots of help!

! Great to have you in our community! I'm also a not-very-accurate guesser on breeds. You might post in the link below for more predictions. Good luck to you and have fun! Oh, and yes...hardware cloth is where it's at!!

Post photos in the "what gender/breed is this" somebody should know. Very pretty girl I think. There may be a reason why they don't use the roost, to high, to low, to close to walls, to young to figure how to fly up etc. Too dark for them to see it when they go in. If your roost is not too high you might want to set them on the roost at night. They won't move in the dark.
