Hi everyone,
I'm new to Backyard Chicken. My husband and I are getting chicken but my Mother -in-law has had chicken since my husband was about 12 years of age. I have learned a lot from her as to how to care for chickens BUT I have also learned more about what not to do. My husband and I have 3 adult boy in there 20's and and 11 years old daughter. Our daughter, through her grandma know about chickens and she is one of the reasons we decided to go ahead and start raising them.
Right now my husband and I are have some difficulty with the foundation for the coop because of the ground on our property. We are trying to decide what would be the best way to build our foundation. My Mother -in-law's coop is very dark. She has no windows and in the winter does not let her chickens out because of the cold. Her chicken's don't lay in the winter. I have been going through everyone's post's and doing a lot of research. I have learned a lot. I thank all of you for that! I now know what NOT to do! My mother-in-law had a lot of problem with her chicken's feet and lice. So I will be doing thing's differently!. The only pictures I have are of my oldest son (age 26) and our daughter (age 11) holding my mother-in-laws chickens. I will post them later.
I have been researching cold climate hardy breeds and friendly breeds because we are about 10 minutes from the Michigan state boarder and it get cold here. I just want to say thank you again for all the information I have gained through your post. It has been very helpful! I will post pictures as they come.
