Hi im in texas . I have buff orps. 1 rooster 2 hens. Need to go out of town f/a week can I lock rooroo up w/hens and new chicks? Coop is 9' x 9'.

Depends on the age of the chicks, if they were broody hatched, and the temperament of your flock. If you give me the answer to all three I can give you some advice as to what I think the best (safest) way to put them together.

Are they all together now? Normally, the broody/mama will protect new chicks from the other hens. It's always possible something will go wrong, though. My limited experience has been that it's always the hens that try to go after the chicks; the cocks that I've had have been protective of the chicks, and helped care for them.

And welcome to our forum!

I don't trust leaving my birds alone for more than 24 hours as many things can and do happen. So just be aware that it may or may not go smoothly. Make sure all water and feeders are locked down so that they will never run out of feed or water.

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!
