Hi,
I'm hoping to have some ideas about raising chickens in AK. We bought a house that came with a chicken coop already, so I thought it might be nice to have a few chickens in the coop.

I have a few questions:
1. What kind of chickens breeds (eggs layer) that do well in Alaska?
2. As a new starter, how many chicks should I start with?
3. Does the coop need to be insulated?

Thanks for any advices.

Just wanted to say HI and welcome. You and I seem to be the only ones awake LOL I sure wish I had a clue about Alaska and chickens, I don't but I will be interested to hear what others tell you.

Please go to the "where am I, where are you." forum and look for the Alaskan thread. People there will be able to give you much better advice re: best breeds for your climate and

and coops, feed etc.
