New to BYC and need lots of advice

Hi everyone .. I am new to BYC and waiting till the spring to get them.. We are building the coop now to have it ready.
Any tips, advice, warnings is very much appreciated.

Make your coop out of good wood. It rilly helps if you insulate your coop. Make the run door strong that's how most predators get in your coop so use good latches and hinges. Make shore your coop has a window so they can get natchearl light and the window shooed be double paned. Wood shavings are good for bedding. :welcome
 
If you coop is well built in shouldn't need insulation except in areas with extreme climate issues. Windows are good but, should be backed by 1/2"hardware cloth to keep predators out. Chickens also like a roost near a window to they can look outside.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on the hardware cloth. There are too many predators that can either tear through chicken wire or pass through the openings in the mesh. Hardware cloth has saved chicken owners many tears. Please feel free to ask any specific questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in building your coop and getting your flock. Are you planning on getting any specific breed?

Build it as big as you can afford. You and your chickens will appreciate the room. Have them roost low to the floor, put lots of venting in your ceiling and give them a big run when not free ranging. Build and over build it to keep predators out. Critters of the day and night have a lot of time on their hands and will work at something if they think a chicken dinner is moments away. As long as you can't break in, neither can they. Use hardware cloth on all exterior parts of the coop and run and it never hurts to have extra nest boxes for those times when you have broodies hogging up boxes.

Make it tall enough you can stand up in it. Your chickens won't care, but you sure will when you clean it each week.
