Hello everyone! Our family is new to your family and I'm looking forward to learning lots here. I raised chickens as a young'un in east Texas, but I am wondering how northern IN chicken ranching is different (other than more insulated housing needs). We are looking to raise both meat chickens (all un-named of course unless it's the typical "Nugget," "Noodles," "Parmesan," "Marsala," etc.) The rest of the herd will be layers. Those are the type with which I am the most familiar. I would also consider throwing a few ducks in (as we have a pond) and several guineas. I've always loved guineas. And, maybe a white midget turkey for good measure. So, we're off on a new journey with this. I have been looking through the site for coop designs, nesting box designs, wondering about chicken "saddles" and if they really work, free-ranging (I grew up with free-range chickens that had a fenced area for bad weather days), and many more things. I am sure many of you may be aghast that I would think of eating my chickens, but our "pet" chickens we would not, but only ones specifically raised for that purpose....so if there is anyone of like mind, I will need help in that area. (otherwise it's off to a willing Amish family for help).
Thanks so much!
Tawny
