Hi, I am new to byc, and am new to owning chickens. Actually I haven't gotten any hens yet as I just finished my coop today. I'm am very excited about owning and having chickens. Does anyone know where the best place to get chickens in or close too Redding? Thanks in advance

Welcome to BYC!

And congratulations on getting your coop completed! If you haven't tried it yet, try posting on your state thread to see if anyone in your area can recommend a good place for chicks:

There are online hatcheries that will ship chicks but don't know if that's what you are wanting to do or which ones are in CA (you can google that to find out).

Hope you find the birds you are looking for, good luck!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I used to raise chickens in the Corning area (about 45 minutes south of Redding on I5) and I usually ordered chicks from Dunlap Hatchery (http://dunlaphatchery.net/) and was very happy with their birds and service. Living in Redding, I would suggest going with a very heat hardy breed such as the Mediterranean Breeds or Australorps. I raised Black Australorps in Corning and while my other dual purpose breeds were listless, panting, and holding their wings out in the 117-118 F (sometimes more) summer temps we had in Corning, my Black Australorps were going about their usual business like troopers, which is not surprising when you consider that they are commonly raised in the Australian outback which gets very hot in the summer. Make sure that you have plenty of shade, good coop ventilation, and plenty of cool fresh water for your birds. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
