Hello, I am new to BYC. I started my keeping just before the pandemic. I went in on an order with a friend of mine who had chicken experience already, ordering from a hatchery. I learned about chicken math quickly! I originally only wanted six to start but ended up with ten. Wyandotte’s, Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers. We converted an old wood shed into a coop with an enclosed run. They are all hens. I recently got four Jersey Giants, hatched from a work colleague. They are 8 weeks now and I’m pretty sure I now have 3 roosters out of the 4. One has started crowing. This is why I came to the BYC, I was looking for information on trying to determine what I have. It took me down the rabbit hole ( sorry, chicken hole) reading all kinds of things about chickens. So thanks for being here! I’m happy to have joined.

Hello! Beautiful flock! I'd agree that your assumptions are correct on the three JG cockerels. I love meandering down all of the learning opportunity trails here, too!

Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!
Thank you! I love my girls. I imagine I will enjoy the boys as well. They will probably be no more misbehaved than the ladies LOL
Is the term cockerel for young roosters or the general term for a male?

Hi, it would be a good idea to have a Plan B in case your boys start over breeding the girls or fighting with each other. A cockerel is a male chicken under the age of 1 year. Glossary Definitions of Common Terms
