Hey all, New kid on the block here, from King George va. Mother of , now :(, 5 bantams, one bantam/silkie mix. Just lost my silkie last night/this a.m. to a predator, lost a juvenille bantam last week. Wondering what I can do to not lose any more. I have only had them about two months. Interested in getting another silkie also if anyone knows where to buy one in the area. I had Bella(my silkie) for two months, I adopted her from a man who use to show silkies, and couldnt take care of them any more. When I added Bella to my pin she was the weakest link. I thought that she had been attacked by the rooster, because she had been missing almost her whole right wing. Now I am not so sure it was the Rooster. I nursed her almost back to life, she would not eat or move for two days, in my home for two weeks straight. All I could get her to eat was corn on the cob, and watermelon, which was fine by me as long as she was eating something. Then I built her a tempary pin ,until we could build a coop and pin for her. This a.m. I went out to check on her and she was gone, had a fence tourn down and feathers leading towards the woods. :( Sad to say that I searched every where and she is gone. Now I am wondering if I should be worried about my others? Anyone with advice?

Sorry about the circumstances. Yes, you absolutely should be worried. Whatever took your silky will be back for more. Fortify your pens. lock your coops at night, and get a live trap to catch and eliminate the predator. This may very likely be the work of a raccoon. Chicken wire is no match for them.

Hello and welcome to BYC

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I agree with Sourland. We ended up going that route after losing way to many chickens, fortified coop, traps... Sad, but once they discovered you have chickens, they will not stay away.

Thanks a bunch, after a long hot day of predator proofing our pin, or so we hope, we shall see what tomorrow brings :) Thanks for all the welcomes and advice!

Hey! Welcome from a fellow KGC chicken owner! Technically we're in Dahlgren. There are several BYC members nearby too.

Visit the VA thread under Where Are You thread too!

There are fox, raccoon, possum, owls, hawks, eagles, osprey, cats, roaming dogs and snake predators in our neighborhood.
I have 1/4" hardware cloth over my windows and openings, locks on the coop door and a net over the run.
