Greetings all my name is Ralph I am new to this forum even tho I have been looking through the BYC site for quite a while now. I had three hens and just recently added a fourth hen and a rooster to my poultry family. Two of my other hens keep picking on the new hen poor thing is always running scared trying to keep away from them. Is there any way of stopping that or is that just a normal part of a pecking order. Although I thought that once I got a rooster the whole pecking order would stop cause the roo would be it...lol Any suggestions would be most helpful thank you.

Sincerely,

The roo should be doing his job, but I've found if you are going to add, add 2 or three.

I had some she devil barred rocks once that dominated everyone in my coop at one time. Once I rehomed them, everything was tranquil once again.

Sometimes you're going to get a bird that either doesn't fit in & gets picked on or one that seems to be a bully. Usually it will all work itself out, but if not, someone has to go.

You did not say how long ago this forced integration took place. If there is no bloodshed, it is just normal chicken politics and it takes time. Sometimes a long time. If the bullying go on for more than a few weeks, you've got a pecking order issue and the Roo isn't helping keep peace. Doesn't sound as if he is at the top of the heap yet himself. It happens.

from Ohio. So glad you joined. As long as it doesn't get to the point where blood is being drawn, it will be OK but if blood is drawn, the other chickens will peck her something awful. Keep a good watch.
