Hello all chicken lovers! I'm in Sacramento, CA. I first acquired chickens at my suburban farmette back in 2009. Last August I rehomed all my gals when I sold my house of 20 years and downsized. I now have 15 hens that are 8-weeks old. I'm building an amazing coop (have asked myself a couple times if it should be a tool shed / shop!). I'm almost finished and the 'girls' have been biding their time next door in the side yard at my rental. IDK all the breeds as I ordered a layer-set from Hoover's. At the price of feed, I want heavy egg production. So I've been looking at posts to refresh my brain regarding chicks, etc. Thanks to this site and all of you who post -- even if you think no one reads your experience, many do. I'm grateful for this site and all of you!!

Your quandary over building a coop vs. making it a tool shed feels familiar to me. However, I sometimes face the choice between more stuff and/or vet bills for the critters and more groceries for me :lau!

Congratulations on getting back into the wonderful world of chickens! Hope your girls are great producers; I've been very happy with my Hoover's chicks over the years. One of my 4-year-old girls sustained severe frostbite damage to her feet, could barely walk and nearly died over the winter. However, she is one tough girl and is back to laying three times a week!!

Welcome to BYC and best wishes with your flock and its shelter!
