New to the site and to having chickens. So much to learn and losing some in the learning. I just read about "deep litter". Is this preferable to using a poop board as far as composting goes? Can it be done on a wood floor rather than a dirt one? We live in Alabama and have 15 Rhode Island Red Hens and 1 RIR rooster. If I learn how to use this site I'll be asking a lot of questions. We love the eggs!!

I use sand. I have no pop boards. I just run a rack through it. I have some with dirt floors and a couple with wood, although I'm rebuild and there will be all wood floors.

In about a month I'll also start using hay again. I think. Still trying to figure that one out. Sand is so much easier to clean and hay is so much easier to compost although you have to remove so much in comparison.

Welcome to the madness...

At first it will be surgical gloves, hold your breath and a poop tray.

Pretty soon plain 'ol sand, bare feet

and in your jammies will be the norm...
