Hello to everyone!! I am about to acquire approx 4-6 laying hens in the next month. I grew up cattle farming and vegetable gardening (on a large scale) but have never raised chickens. I want this to be a family project including my two elementary age children but also to become more self sufficient. I currently plant approx 1 acre in vegetables year round all crops. I am thinking of starting out with a chicken tractor and also having a small coop for the fall and winter. I live in SC so mild winters lasting Feb/Mar then its spring weather. I do worry about the extreme heat of our summer months which can range from the 90s-100s with extreme humidity for long periods at a time. Any and all advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks SCfarmer

Hello and welcome to BYC

Have a look at the Breeds section for more info on the different breeds, climate tolerance, egg laying etc. For other chicken related advice you ask the "locals" in your state thread in the Where am I? Where are you! section. Enjoy!

! Pleased you joined us! Yes, certain breeds wouldn't fare as well in your high heat and humidity. I live in Kansas and the summer we had last year was a beast. The breeds I had that struggled the most were the Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps. Others have have had better luck but mine did do as well. Good luck to you!
