I am new to BYC and I just completed my coop and run. Never had chickens before and recently picked up a couple bantam roosters that came together. I am now on the lookout for some hens. I enjoyed building the coop and now looking forward to having some chickens!

Welcome to BYC! You have a very nice looking coop. The only concern I have looking at it is the chicken wire you have used on the run. There are lots of predators that can either tear through chicken wire (racoons, opposums, foxes, dogs, etc.) or pass through the openings in it (weasels, minks, snakes, rats, etc.) and potentially take out an entire flock in one night. If there are any possibilities of these predators in your area, I would recommend replacing the chicken wire (or covering it) with 1/2 inch hardware cloth and covering the chain link door with hardware cloth. Also, if you don't have any kind of buried mesh skirts, I would recommend attaching a buried hardware cloth skirt outward from the outer perimeter of your run to discourage digging predators. It doesn't have to be buried deep, but it needs to extend outward from the perimeter at least a couple of feet. I know that addition of hardware cloth will cause some extra expense, but it will be a cheaper than having to replace your flock. Good luck in getting your chickens.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

What an adorable coop you have there! Yes, you will definitely want to cover that chicken wire with hardware cloth. All kinds of critters can either chew thru it, slither, crawl and sneak in thru chicken wire. But other than that, you have a beautiful coop!

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

New guy again - my parents Earl and Peggy Partlow just stopped by and brought me 4 chickens! A variety! Awesome parents! they have been married since 1955! Thank you!
