:pHi. I have been reading BYC for a while now. I don't have any chickens but I am planning on getting some sometime in the future. I still live with my parents so that is the reason. I love ducks as well. In fact I love all birds, ducks and other animals in that category. I joined this forum because I wanted to learn abit before I got and winged creatures. My other love is tortoises. I have a tortoise and would love to add to that. I'm really excited to learn more on this forum. Thank you for letting me into BYC.

Welcome!

It's a smarter way to start, actually learning something about pets you intend to get before rushing into getting fifty chicks in your bathtub with no place to house them.

What type is the best to get. Duck or chicken. Also what type of duck/chicken should I get. It needs to be friendly,be able to cope with cold climates, don't need to much space and a wonderful type that doesn't bully others and they act in a tame way. Thx

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You might want to first stop by our learning center for lots of good articles on getting started, raising your chicks, housing and caring for your adult flocks...

Lots of nice breeds out there that are very cold hardy and friendly as well....Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, Wyandottes, EE's, Barred Rocks, Silkies, etc...Have a look at these two breeds pages for some quick info on the different breeds...

Welcome to BYC!! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Buff orps are my fave breed! They are calm, docile, affectionate, hardy and good layers. Australorps, silkies, sussex, Barred rocks, EEs, faverolles and cochins are all great too. Be sure to check out our learning center. Two Crows has given you the link.

Welcome to BYC! I'm a chicken person and don't know much about ducks (although I've had a few), but I have to admit that ducklings are the ultimate in cute. As far as chickens go, I would suggest Australorps, Orpingtons, Cochins, Sussex, or Brahmas. I've had all of these breeds (still have Black Australorps and Buff Orpingtons) and they all fit your criteria [friendly, cold hardy, take confinement well (within reason), and are calm and docile breeds]. If egg laying is a consideration, Australorps are the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Whichever you decide to get, duck or chicken, and whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
