Hello,

I am new to BYC and to chicken raising. despite being new to this, I have already found a deep affection for our flock. We began with 6 and now have 12, but will probably go back down to 10 as 3 are roosters. I had a feeling that they were early on but had to wait for them to get bigger.

Our flock:
3 Buff Minorca
3 Buff Laced Polish
4 Ameraucana
2 RIR

I am looking forward to learning from everyone here at BYC.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! Yes, roosters are not needed in a flock if you are just in this for the eggs. And the hens will be happier without them.

So glad you could join our community and we do welcome you to our flock!

We're glad to have you. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Good luck with your flock! I hope you can find a good home (or a soup pot) for those extra roosters.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Definitely remove those 2 extra roosters from the flock. The recommended ratio of roosters to hens is 1 rooster for every 10 hens as too many roosters will become very hard physically on your hens; over-breeding them, biting and plucking the feathers from their necks and backs, battering them, and potentially, seriously injuring them. The only reason you need a rooster at all is to fertilize eggs for hatching, and 1 roosters can easily handle 10 hens in that regard. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
