Hello,
We are almost brand new to the chicken raising community. We started our quest in Feb of 2022 and got our first chickens in March of 2022. We bought a used coop and took about a month to retro fit it, clean it up and install a new door b/c the old door was rotting away. After much research, I decided on Black Australorps (I am a little disappointed I didn't get a mix of black and blue australorps at the time). We brought home our first 4 pullets at 13 weeks old on March 14, 2022. We named them Gertrude, Marietta, Beatrice and LC (LC is for loner chick b/c she always seems to stray from the group). I can no longer tell them apart, so I just call them ladies.
I knew straight away that our coop was too small for the additions I had planned. So we started to add on to the coop in April and more than doubled the size. Then came Rooster Cogburn, Amelia Egghart and Amber (they came to us at 8 weeks old). Amber is the only only I will always know the name of b/c her eyes are Amber in color, not the dark brown like the others. A little disappointed b/c I know that is a DNA fault. We will just give away any babies that she produces with amber eyes and not keep them in the gene pool.
Planning on adding two Blue Australorps pullets to our flock to get blue babies. I will wait a little bit for this b/c everything is nice and settled at the moment after the new additions of hatched babies who are now six weeks old.
I absolutely LOVE the life of chicken keeper. They are fun and funny to watch. All six of my layers are producing eggs and I get 5-6 eggs a day. They were even faithful to lay in the 107 degree heat we had here for months this year.
