We are new to "chicken life" and have learned a lot just from being on this site!:D We are learning by putting our feet to the fire, but already thoroughly enjoy it. Copied the sample template to let everyone get an idea about us. Look forward to having any questions/concerns answered by the knowledgeable people on this great site!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We got our day old chicks on May 11, 2013. First time we have ever had chickens.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We got 8 girls originally, but were recently given an older rooster (17-20 weeks old).
The jury is still out on him. He seems to be a "coop hog" and the girls are scared of
him. Had him for a little over two weeks now.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have 6 RIRs, 2 Ameraucanas, and Big Boy is an Auracana.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
When we started looking at purchasing chickens, I googled breeds because I didn't
want flighty crazy chickens. My daughter was locked in a coop when she was little (at a
friends house) and was afraid of getting into the same situation with a chicken chasing
her around. We have made GREAT choices in the girls we have.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We live in Texas and enjoy hunting and fishing. We have 1 1/4 acres outside of town
and have a large garden and a fixer upper house that we continually work on. We are
also avid bowlers and watch a lot of high school softball (my daughter is on the high
school team). We graduated our son from high school this year.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Besides our 8 girls and Big Boy, we have three dogs, two cats and a rabbit. We have
our own little zoo/farm going on!
My husband is an R/N and I am currently a student at Texas State, studying
Agribusiness Management with a Horticulture Specialization. Our son starts college in
the fall and our daughter will be a sophomore.

That is us in a nutshell and we are happy. Adding chickens was the next logical step in making ourselves a little more self sufficient. My husbands next idea is to add pigs and if he could, he'd add a cow or two

Glad to have joined to community and look forward to all of the comments and assistance from others!

Hello! Welcome to BYC!

Good luck with your flock!

Welcome to BYC from California wine county in the Western Sierra Foothills!

Although BYC is THE Chicken resource - search for anything and there will be articles, discussion threads, and also those "sticky notes" in each forum, the real prize in joining BYC is the incredible community of members.

I now have quite a few really good friends I have never actually met! I have also met folks through BYC, developing strong friendships there too.

I kinda suspect Drumstick Diva is correct in assessing the issue with your rooster. :D
