I'm about to order day-old chicks. What supplies will I need? I have finished the hen house, but that's all. Also, should I order the vaccinated chicks? Any points in the right direction is much appreciated!

! Happy you joined our community! Well, for starters they need heat, water, and food. As a new chicken owner I would advise you investigate this forum:

You will learn all the things you need to know. Some folks order vaccinated chicks - others don't. Some feed medicated chick starter, some un-medicated.

Whatever you decide, I wish you the best and have a Happy New Year!

Glad you joined us.

A few things you need are a feeder, a waterer, feed, a heat lamb, pine shavings, and if its a big waterer put marbles in the waterer so they dont drown. Its up to you if you want them vaccinated. If you read some of the article in the Raising Chicks section of byc, you will learn a lot. Good Luck.

What redsoxs said! Welcome to BYC.

Congrats and enjoy the process.
I did a lot of research and talking with others prior to getting
our girls. I wanted eggs and also good natured chicks since I was
doing this to create fun memories with our grandson.

Well, he's 6 and the newness has worn off. My daughter told
me it would. I invited him to come play with them today but he
wanted to play with his new wii game instead :)

I think once the eggs come in different colors than the
grocery store, he may show a little more interest. Regardless,
I am having a BLAST! I never imagined enjoying chickens this
much.

I lost one little one just a few days after getting our girls.
The feed store told me they got a bad batch and gave me another
one from a different batch. All are growing and appear to be happy.
Our family is laughing a lot more too. My experience is that they
have been the simplest pet we have owned. (well, maybe the fish
were simpler but not as fun
