What breeds are you planning on keeping? Lots of really friendly birds that are great layers. You can check out our breeds page in the learning center to see what members are saying about the different breeds...

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!

THANK YOU!!....yeah...I've already been online with this site for the past 4 hours and taking LOTS of notes. I'm interested in EGG layers, foragers, with minimal broodiness...but friendly....so far I'm leaning toward one of the Plymouth Rocks, a Rhode Island, and not sure what else...kinda want to mix.

I think my Rhode Island Red is my best chicken overall for intelligence, foraging, and egg laying.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck in your new chicken venture! Wyandottes, Delawares and Sussex are other breeds you might consider, I do fine RIR to be rather bossy in a mixed flock.

Go to the Learning Center, check out the forums, ask any questions you may have - you will do fine. Welcome to BYC.
