Chirping
Hi, I've been lurking for months as I've been planning for my first flock. I'm hoping to find opinions on coop/run bedding options for the pretty mild Bay Area climate, and seek advice for getting chickens used to being picked up (my chicks are very friendly but hate being grabbed)...so I figured I should finally join so I can start posting questions. I'm including glamour shots of the girls from last week, before they got too bold and active to photograph on the well-lit shelf
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm brand new... I've had my chicks for about two and a half weeks
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
4 chicks (three are almost three weeks old and one is almost five weeks old).
(3) What breeds do you have?
Ruth Bader Ginsbird is a white-crested black Polish
Emma Goldhen is an Easter Egger
Joni Mitshell is a blue Silkie
Octavia Bawkler is a white Cochin
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Enjoying their personalities and chicken cuddles
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love spending time outdoors... Backpacking, hiking, climbing, skiing (especially backcountry), biking
When I'm not out in nature I'm passionate about sustainability, good urban design, and equity.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a wildlife biologist and got my start doing bird work, chickens are very different but I do love having my own feathered friends.
I live with my husband and the real boss of the house, our incredibly spoiled cat
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've wanted chickens for years since falling for my friend's very friendly chickens, and finally moved to a house with a yard in late May and started lurking then, particularly in the coop building and raising baby chicks threads.
