good day from Maine! I have been beaten, and I admit gladly, we are buying our first chickens!!! This started today with the love of my life pushing me, finally over the edge. I called our local TSC and they will have chicks next week, so, here we go! Our kids do not know yet, so we get to hand them another surprise and hopefully get to teach them some respect and teach them some responsibility. I am quite the handy man, I have no fear of building things, my only fear is the overbuild...Do I really need to have a coop that will support my 250 pounds? I am excited about the coop build, and look forward to showing off my ideas which are largely based on what I have found here. I live in the woods of Maine, we have all of the predators, but I have a great dog who loves his family, and I am a really good shot when it comes to those less than wanted predators. Thank you all for your kindness and I look forward to sharing our growth in chickens with you!

! Great to have you here! New chicks are an exciting time! Glad you are involving the kids. I think you need to make your coop to suit the ability of your predators to get into it. I have read about people losing chicks to bears! A bear proof coop must be a sight to see. Below are a couple of links you might find useful. Enjoy your journey!
